Punching

Punching

You can use one shape to 'punch' out part of another.

Draw one shape on top of another.
In the layers panel, hold your Shift key and select both layers.

From the menus, choose Modify > COmbine Paths >Punch

This is what your finished shape will look like.

With a little creativity, and repeated punching, a range of shapes can be created.
