Services start automatically and then run in the background to provide functionality for the RAD application that you are running. The two services of most interest are Baldi and Festival. The Baldi service runs the talking head. Festival does the text to speech conversions. You can see which services are running by clicking Start > Speech Toolkit > Service Browser. While you have an application running, you will see a window that looks something like this:
This shows that the Festival and Baldi services are busy and the Fluent service (runs a different animated face) is sleeping. You can close a running service by right clicking on its state in the Service Browser. You can start a new service by clicking Start > Speech Toolkit > Services > Click on the service you want to start. The CSLU Toolkit automatically starts only a single instance of each service (Festival and Baldi) This server can only have one connection at a time. If you try to have more than one instance of a service running, you will get an error message.
The error message indicates that the RAD TTS client could not connect to the server. The most likely reason being that another process is attached to this server.
(Run "Start > Speech
Toolkit > Service Browser" to see the states of the various CSLU Toolkit
services.) |
