Speech recognition 

The toolkit supports several approaches to speech recognition.

Speech synthesis

The toolkit integrates the Festival text-to-speech synthesis system. Festival is commonly used through other programs, rather than being interfaced to directly by the user. It, like Baldi, is a service which can run in the background. 

Facial animation

The toolkit features Baldi, an animated 3D talking head whose 3-D lips, tongue and jaw movements are a near-perfect copy of human speech movements, known as phonemes. Baldi produces accurate automatic generation of visible speech, with the ability to view internal articulators during speech output. The orientation of the face can be changed so it can be viewed from different perspectives while speaking. Also, the basic emotions of surprise, happiness, anger, sadness, disgust, and fear can be communicated through facial expressions. Baldi belongs to a general class of programs called services.

Baldi Sync 

This program allows you to record a phrase and then animate Baldi with your voice. You can modify the alignment of Baldi's speech with yours and save all of this information as a sound object file (sob). These files can be used from RAD and other applications to provide animated natural speech. 

Authoring tools

The toolkit includes the Rapid Application Developer (RAD), which makes it possible to quickly design a speech application using a simple drag-and-drop interface. 

Waveform analysis tools

The toolkit provides a complete set of tools for recording, representing, displaying and manipulating speech. Signal representations such as spectrograms, pitch contours and formant tracks can be displayed and manipulated in separate windows. 

Programming environment

The toolkit comes with complete programming environments for both C and Tcl
