Speech recognitionThe toolkit supports several approaches to speech recognition. Speech synthesisThe toolkit integrates the Festival text-to-speech synthesis system. Festival is commonly used through other programs, rather than being interfaced to directly by the user. It, like Baldi, is a service which can run in the background. Facial animationThe toolkit features Baldi, an animated 3D talking head whose 3-D lips, tongue and jaw movements are a near-perfect copy of human speech movements, known as phonemes. Baldi produces accurate automatic generation of visible speech, with the ability to view internal articulators during speech output. The orientation of the face can be changed so it can be viewed from different perspectives while speaking. Also, the basic emotions of surprise, happiness, anger, sadness, disgust, and fear can be communicated through facial expressions. Baldi belongs to a general class of programs called services.
